Frequently Asked Questions

What is biomedical illustration, animation, and design?
A biomedical illustrator, animator, and designer is a specialized professional trained in both science & medicine alongside visual arts, creating accurate, detailed, and visually engaging visualizations of medical and scientific concepts. These visualizations help explain complex scientific or medical topics for broad application including education, research, publishing, patient communication, and legal or marketing materials.
what does the process look like?
  1. Initial, free consult — A brief 30-40 minute meeting in which we go over your goals, content, and target audience
  2. Project quote  — Within 1-2 days of our initial consult, I send a project outline, timeline, and estimated cost
  3. Drafting — We work together to create a draft to use as a base for the final illustration or animation
  4. Rendering — Approved drafts are developed into polished, accurate illustrations or animations
  5. Final deliverable  — High-resolution final images are delivered to you in the final formats you need

how much does it cost?
Pricing depends on the complexity, detail, usage rights, and timeline of the project. I offer custom quotes after a short and free consultation to help you decide if I'm a good fit for your vision.
how long does a project take?
Timelines vary based on the scope of work, complexity, and visual style:
  • Illustration and research figures — around 2 to 4 weeks
  • Infographics, graphic layouts, and posters  — around 2 to 6 weeks
  • Presentation slides — around 1 to 4 weeks
  • Motion graphics — around 1 to 2 weeks
  • 2D animation — around 1 to 2 months
  • 3D animation — around 2 to 4 months
Got a project due soon? I can often accommodate rush projects to ensure your project is looking good, on time.
what do I need to provide to get started?
All you need to get started is:
  1. A brief description of what you need
  2. Your intended audience and use
Reference materials (ex. images, text, research papers, surgical notes, or even draft ideas you've made, etc.) can help me understand your vision, but are not necessary to get started.
do I own the artwork after the projecT?
You will receive usage rights tailored to your needs and intended use—this is referred to as copyright. Full copyright ownership remains with the artist unless otherwise agreed upon. This is standard practice and helps to protect both parties.
what is copyright and how does it work?
Copyright is a legal term that refers to the ownership of a given resource, including where and how it can be used. An artist automatically holds copyright for anything they create. This copyright can be licensed to a client based on their intended use of the work. Based on your personal needs, I will help you decide what tier of copyright license is best suited for you.
can you help me figure out kind of visual is best for my project?
Absolutely. Part of my job is helping you figure out the best visual approach for your project. Just send me a message with a rough idea of what you're working on, and we’ll go from there.
